College Football Facility Notes: Nevada's Mackay Stadium Approved For Upgrades

In Nevada, Chris Murray reported an "extensive renovation" to Mackay Stadium, its first since '96, "leaped its final major hurdle on Friday afternoon when it was approved" by the Univ. of Nevada Board of Regents. The $11.5M renovation is "scheduled to be completed in time" for the '16 season. The renovation plans to "add an 8,500-square-foot club level to the stadium's west side; add 'loge boxes' near the club level; add 4,062 permanent chair-backs to replace bleachers; expand east-side suites to include outdoor patio space; make the stadium more ADA compliant; and add restrooms." Mackay "will have its capacity drop from 30,000 to 26,000" (RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL, 12/6).

NIP TUCK: Univ. of Cincinnati President Santa Ono, AD Mike Bohn and football coach Tommy Tuberville all attended a "topping-off ceremony Friday" for Nippert Stadium's $86M renovation and expansion. UC is "scheduled to christen the 'new' Nippert" on Sept. 5, in time for the '15 season. The expansion "mainly will come via premium seating and focuses on the west side of the stadium, adding suites, club seats and loge boxes within a new press box structure." The new structure will "be about 1 1/2 stories taller than the former press box and about 130 yards long." The curvature of the facility will "match the upper deck on the east side and it will contain four levels: A press and operations level, suite level, scholarship club level and patio suites mezzanine level" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 12/6).

MORE CHEDDAR: In Madison, Wisconsin Technical Council President Tom Still noted Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium "underwent a technology facelift this summer that placed it among an elite cadre of major college and professional stadiums equipped with a high-speed Wi-Fi network, an Internet protocol television network and a distributed antenna system." The upgrade has been a "welcome addition to football Saturdays especially for those thousands of fans who couldn’t even get a cell phone signal in past seasons." The new stadium Wi-Fi system is "among the densest" in the U.S. -- as "measured by the number of access points needed to extend coverage to all of Camp Randall’s hard-to-reach spots" (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 12/7).

JUST A MINUTE, MAN: UMass recently opened its 55,000-square-foot Football Performance Center, and the facility features an interactive kiosk that includes details and statistics about the history of the football program. St. Paul-based Tightrope Media Systems powers the kiosk (UMass).
