NFL Retirees Opposed To Concussion Settlement File Final Opposition Papers

NFL retirees opposed to the settlement of concussion claims brought against the league filed their last opposition papers yesterday, including nine new statements from medical professionals who criticize the proposed deal. The reasons are generally the same: the failure of the deal to cover CTE. The nine, plus two existing experts, offered their statements free of charges, the retirees counsel at MoloLamken wrote in the brief. "Nine of the most prominent individuals working in the field of neuroscience have (submitted) declarations ... in support of Objectors -- all without compensation for their time and effort," MoloLamken's brief read. The objector also criticized the NFL experts who question the link between football and brain injuries, arguing the league paid for their opinions. "Their use of bought-and-paid-for experts in an attempt to cobble together an alternative medical and scientific reality is reminiscent of the tobacco companies claiming that lung cancer was not linked to smoking," MoloLamken argued. MoloLamken represents seven retirees, including Sean Morey and Alan Faneca. Despite the filings and additional declarations, Judge Anita Brody is still expected to approve the settlement, which would last 65 years and is uncapped financially. There is this expectation because she has already preliminarily approved the deal.
