Franchise Notes

In N.Y., Pat Leonard reports the NHL yesterday fined the Kings $100,000 for "violating the terms" of D Slava Voynov’s "league-imposed suspension after he was arrested, and later charged, for felony domestic violence." The fine is the "latest jab in what has become a public battle" between the league and Kings GM Dean Lombardi. He "mocked and criticized the NHL’s initial handling of Voynov’s suspension, in which the league refused to allow" the club "financial relief to replace Voynov with another player under the salary cap for a full month" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/3).

THE BUC STOPS HERE? In Pittsburgh, Bill Brink reports the Pirates "offered a contract to all 11 of their arbitration-eligible players before the deadline" last night, a move that "could double the team’s current salary commitments" in '15. If the Pirates keep all 11, their combined '15 salaries "could exceed" $30M. The Pirates already have $27.5M "committed" to CF Andrew McCutchen, Ps A.J. Burnett and Charlie Morton, and LF Starling Marte for '15. The arbitration contracts "could raise the commitment to roughly" $60M for 15 players. Pirates President Frank Coonelly in early November said that the payroll "could increase as it has in the past couple seasons," or roughly $10M more than their $82.1M payroll from '14 (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/3).

MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY: In Tacoma, Gregg Bell noted Seahawks coach Pete Carroll "describes his relationship" with Owner Paul Allen, GM John Schneider and President Peter McLoughlin as "transcendent." Carroll said, “I have such good support with all that John does, and Peter, it seems like it’s been effortless, really. We've gotten along so, so smoothly and see eye to eye on everything we've dealt with. ... Paul has been so supportive, and the multitude of things that John’s in charge of, (Allen) really impacts what he does a great deal with all the money and all that kind of stuff." He added, “I feel like we just work things out. Everybody is very respectful of the position and authority and titles and all that ... it really couldn’t be better" (THENEWSTRIBUNE.com, 12/1).
