Woods' Decision To Use The Players' Tribune For Critique Of Jenkins Not Influenced By Jeter

Woods is the first golfer to write a piece for Jeter's new website
For Tiger Woods' camp, Derek Jeter's upstart blog The Players' Tribune "was the right platform at the right time ... to lambaste golf writer Dan Jenkins for his fictitious interview with Woods," according to Alan Bastable of GOLF.com. Players' Tribune Editorial Dir Gary Hoenig in an e-mail wrote, "They were aware that we were encouraging athletes to speak their mind. I think they felt we were reaching a broader audience than their site." Bastable noted Woods is the first golfer "to grab a byline" on Jeter's site. He and Jeter "are friends" and both "endorse the swoosh." Both also are "represented by Excel Sports Management." But Hoenig wrote that Jeter "did not influence Woods' decision to write for the site." Hoenig: "Derek didn’t solicit the piece and only knew about it when we got it." He added of Woods, "The thrust of the piece came from him. We offer editing advice on all pieces but only at the discretion of the athlete." Bastable wrote it "was surprising" that Woods, who is "usually reluctant to share his opinions publicly, wrote the piece at all." It was a "rare glimpse in to his psyche and begs the question, Will we see more Tribune contributions from Woods?" Hoenig: "We’d certainly welcome them, but it’s entirely up to him" (GOLF.com, 11/25).
