USOC Hopes Nike Deal Will Increase Merchandise Sales During Non-Olympic Years

The USOC and Nike yesterday announced that they have extended their sponsorship deal through '20. Nike will provide footwear and apparel for U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes, including the medal stand uniform for the '18 PyeongChang and '20 Tokyo Games. Nike also will provide the award uniforms for the '16, '18 and '20 U.S. Youth Olympic teams, plus the '15 and '19 U.S. Pan American and Parapan American teams (USOC). The AP's Eddie Pells noted "no dollar figures were given for the latest extension, though these contracts traditionally have been worth" between $12-15M over four years. USOC CMO Lisa Baird said that the deal is "even more valuable because of Nike's worldwide reach and its advertising campaigns that use Olympic athletes." Pells noted Nike is the "second domestic sponsor to renew with the USOC" through '20; Chobani "extended its deal in September." One of Baird's missions over the next few years is to "get wider distribution of Olympic-branded merchandise during non-Olympic years." She "hopes Nike will help" in that regard (AP, 11/24).
