Audience Analysis: ESPN Gets Strong Audience For Randy Moss "30 For 30" Documentary

ESPN drew 2.17 million viewers for “Rand University” on Nov. 11, marking the net’s best documentary audience since the premiere of “The Book Of Manning” on Sept. 24, 2013 and eighth-best documentary audience since the “30 for 30” project began in ’09. The film on former NFLer Randy Moss was easily the best audience of the fall slate of “30 for 30” films to date, topping the 1.58 million viewers earned by “Brian & The Boz” on Oct. 28. One more “30 for 30” remains this fall, with “The U Part 2” set to air after the Heisman Trophy presentation on Dec. 13. College sports documentaries seem to be the top draw for ESPN. Eight of the top 10 ESPN documentary audiences to date have involved college sports in some capacity, led by the 3.6 million viewers for “You Don’t Know Bo” on Dec. 8, 2012.

MIAMI HEAT: ESPN drew 5.22 million viewers for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Ford EcoBoost 400 last Sunday, which saw Kevin Harvick win his first Cup title. The finale was the first under a revamped Chase format that saw four drivers go to Homestead-Miami Speedway with a chance to win the season title. The audience was the best for the Cup finale since Tony Stewart won in ’11 (6.8 million viewers). Sunday’s race audience also was up 2% from 5.12 million viewers last year, when Jimmie Johnson took the title.

GOING TO THE MAT: Spike drew 1.82 million viewers for the main event of Bellator 131 last Saturday night, which featured Tito Ortiz-Stephan Bonner. That audience marks the top MMA fight audience on cable TV for ’14 to date.
