Senators GM Bryan Murray Discloses He Is Battling Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Senators GM BRYAN MURRAY disclosed to TSN on Thursday that he is battling Stage 4 colon cancer. In an interview with the net's Michael Farber, Murray said there is "no cure at this point for me, but the word is we’ll keep doing chemo and hopefully reduce the tumors and the effect and I‘ll get some time out of that.” He said the “frustrating part” was he could have had the disease “possibly up to 10 years and there were no signs.” The Senators in July announced Murray was diagnosed with cancer, but did not disclose any other details. Farber reported Murray "now knows that his cancer was preventable," as he lamented not having a colonoscopy. Murray: "A simple colonoscopy in my case probably would have solved the problem that I have.” Farber noted Murray, one of the "most prominent cancer-stricken Canadians," is "spreading the word" about cancer prevention through the NHL’s “Hockey Fights Cancer” campaign. Murray: “We want to be part of the solution. People in hockey are affected by cancer as well as outside of it and we want the message to get to people.” TSN’s Rod Smith said Murray “continues his day-to-day duties” as Senators GM while undergoing his cancer treatments (TSN, 11/13). In Ottawa, Ken Warren notes Murray, who turns 72 next month, will not always "accompany the Senators on road trips" due to his chemo schedule, but he "has no plans to step down from his role" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 11/14). Following last night's game against the Oilers, Senators coach PAUL MACLEAN said, "The team obviously has tremendous respect for Bryan, and the fight he has in front of him and is going through. The team stands behind him 100%" (OTTAWA SUN, 11/14).
