NFL Week 9 Overnights: Broncos-Patriots Delivers Season-High Rating For CBS

Ratings for the second half of the NFL season got off to a strong start yesterday. Week 9 overnight ratings look to be up on the whole, fueled by a much-hyped Broncos-Patriots matchup in the Sunday national window. CBS earned an 18.6 overnight for the Patriots' 43-21 win over the Broncos, marking the net's highest-rated telecast of the season to date. Yesterday's rating marks a 21% increase from Patriots-Steelers in '13, which was featured in 88% of the country. Broncos-Patriots also ranks as CBS' third-best regular-season NFL overnight in the last 16 years. While the national window was up, CBS saw a 22% drop for its regional coverage. Meanwhile, Fox averaged a 14.3 overnight for its singleheader yesterday, up 12% over a 12.8 figure last year and Fox' best singleheader this season to date. Last night, NBC drew an 11.9 overnight for Ravens-Steelers on "SNF," up 4% from Colts-Texans in Week 9 last year. Pittsburgh led all markets with a 46.2 local rating, while Baltimore drew a 36.3 rating (Karp & Carpenter, THE DAILY).

HYPE MACHINE: In Denver, Dusty Saunders writes the "pregame hype" surrounding Broncos-Patriots "reached Super Bowl proportions." CBS offered "career highlights" of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, "all the way from peewee football games to their lofty NFL status." It "seemed as if everyone who ever played with Manning or Brady offered opinions about their styles of play -- all positive, of course." NFL Network "featured five former quarterback stars in separate interviews, perhaps in an effort to provide controversial commentary." On a "more serious level," CBS play-by-play man Jim Nantz "compared their frequent battles to the Palmer-Nicklaus, Bird-Magic and Ali-Frazier rivalries" (DENVER POST, 11/3).

AIKY BREAKY HEART: In Dallas, Barry Horn noted with less than 10 minutes remaining in yesterday's Cardinals-Cowboys game, the Cowboys faced "fourth-and-1 at the Cardinals’ 34-yard line." Instead of "trying for a field goal, the call was for a DeMarco Murray run up the middle," but there "was no gain." For "some reason," Fox analyst Troy Aikman "didn’t get a chance to first guess the move and he never second-guessed it." Play-by-play man Joe Buck "didn’t set him up and never came back to it." Some discussion of the decision to "pass up the field goal attempt seemed warranted" (DALLASNEWS.com, 11/2).

NOT AT THEIR BEST? In Baltimore, David Zurawik writes Ravens-Steelers "was not one of the network's greatest performances." One of the "impressive" things about “SNF” is the "remarkable synchronicity between [analyst Cris Collinsworth's] words of analysis and visualization of what he’s saying usually through lightning-quick replays." But there was "less of it than usual." Zurawik writes he also was "surprised to see" sideline reporter Michele Tafoya "so far behind the Twitter reports that [Steelers S Troy Polamalu and LB Ryan Shazier] would not be returning to the field as a result of injuries suffered during the game" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 11/3).
