NCAA President MARK EMMERT "will be deposed Nov. 12 in Indianapolis in a lawsuit stemming from the death" of college football player DEREK SHEELY. Despite the objections of the NCAA, Emmert "is a witness in the civil suit" involving Sheely, a Frostburg State football player who collapsed during an August '11 practice and later died from a head injury (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/30). Meanwhile, lawyers in the MARTIN JENKINS lawsuit, who seek a free market to pay college athletes, on Thursday "added two current college players as named plaintiffs to replace three former players." The suit added Wisconsin basketball player NIGEL HAYES and Middle Tennessee State football player ANFERNEE STEWART (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/30).

GAME CHANGER: BIZWOMEN's Hilary Burns profiles NASCAR Senior VP/Industry Services JILL GREGORY, who after being promoted earlier this month now "spends much of her time and energy sharing NASCAR drivers' stories and building their 'star power.'" Gregory "was in her early 20s when she attended her first NASCAR race." Now, about 25 years later, she "attends about 25 races a year." She also sits on NASCAR's BOD and was recognized in '11 by SportsBusiness Journal's Game Changer program. When Gregory first met NASCAR CMO STEVE PHELPS, he "was working for the NFL." But a "few years later, when Gregory was working for Bank of America, he moved over to NASCAR and recruited her." At that point, her "primary goal was to help the teams attract sponsors" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/29).

NAMES: Longtime New York Marathon Dir ALLAN STEINFELD on Thursday "was among five inducted" into the marathon's HOF. Also inducted was one of the race's founders, GEORGE SPITZ. Former N.Y. Times reporter and editor NEIL AMDUR "also was honored with the George Hirsch journalism award" (NEWSDAY, 10/31)....Celtics Managing Partner & CEO WYC GROUSBECK and his wife, CORINNE, “have separated after 28 years of marriage" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/31)....The WILL SMITH movie with the working title, "CONCUSSION," started "shooting in Pittsburgh Saturday" and will film "through mid-January" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 10/31)....Hamilton, Ontario-based architectural firm Spring Valley Classic Corp. has claimed that it "hasn't been paid for work at Lansdowne Park" in Ottawa, and that it is owed C$3.4M for the "design and construction of the site's signature element." In addition to the city, the suit, "names as defendants the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, general contractor Pomerleau and lender TD Bank" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/30)....Blackhawks C JONATHAN TOEWS is "asking nearly" $2.5M for his downtown Chicago condo (CHICAGOBUSINESS.com, 10/29).
