EverBank Field Adds On New Seats To Meet Requirement For Florida-Georgia Game

Officials for Jacksonville and SMG, which operates EverBank Field, said that the installation of 13,000 additional seats at the stadium for Saturday's annual Florida-Georgia game "was on schedule," resulting in the contracted number of 82,917 seats being met "under the current 10-year deal," according to Garry Smits of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. The stadium "will be at full capacity despite renovations that cut the number of seats available for Jaguars games to make room for cabanas, swimming pools and the largest scoreboards in the world." The city "has always had to install temporary seats for Florida-Georgia since the new stadium was built for the Jaguars," but the number of what City of Jacksonville Sports & Entertainment Officer Dave Herrell "preferred to call 'modular seating' nearly doubled from 7,000, with an increase in expenses" from $280,000 to around $1.6M. The increase in expenses "was passed by the Jacksonville City Council with the knowledge that providing the universities with fewer seats likely would result in the game moving in the future to the campuses or other cities such as Atlanta or Orlando." The new seats "were constructed in Portugal and shipped through London." The pools, which "have drawn worldwide attention, were drained and the supports for the seats were installed in the empty receptacles." The Jaguars "helped the process by agreeing not to use the pools last Sunday" against the Dolphins (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 10/29).

CAT FANCY: Jaguars President Mark Lamping yesterday said that Owner Shahid Khan is "close to presenting a plan for a mixed-used development at the city-owned riverfront Shipyards property." In Jacksonville, Timothy Gibbons noted the plan, which "should be submitted to the city in coming months ... would have Khan be the master developer of the site." Lamping said that the plan would be submitted "hopefully no later than early next year." Lamping said that it would "include a mix of housing, retail and restaurants and bars, a hotel and marina and 'some sort of attraction.'" He said that the team has "met with an 'endless list of developers' to discuss the project over the past few years ... but has not nailed down particular tenants or partners" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/29).
