Media Notes

In Houston, David Barron noted as CSN Houston reporters and anchors last night prepared for the net's "final studio shows, testimony wrapped up in the channel’s yearlong Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, and a judge set closing arguments for next Tuesday." U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Marvin Isgur will be "asked to approve a reorganization plan that sells the Astros-Rockets-Comcast network to DirecTV and AT&T." However, that plan "includes layoffs for 96 of 141 employees, many of whom worked their final on-air shifts" yesterday with the net's last “Sports Talk Live” talk show and “SportsNet Central” news program (CHRON.com, 10/22).

LEADER OF THE PAC: Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said talks to add Pac-12 Networks on DirecTV are "stonewalled." Scott added that "no progress has been made, and DirecTV 'isn’t interested in having a conversation.'" Scott said that long-term, the Pac-12 "feels that its quality of programming and the breadth of its offerings will help sell DirecTV on adding it to its distribution." In Salt Lake City, Kyle Goon writes in the "short-term, subscribers who want the Pac-12 Networks should not hold their breath." Pac-12 Networks President Lydia Murphy-Stephans said, "For this season, I would not in any way say to somebody, ‘It’s gonna happen’" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 10/23).

GET WELL SOON: In Michigan, Nick Baumgardner reported Univ. of Michigan radio analyst Dan Dierdorf will "miss Saturday's Michigan-Michigan State game in East Lansing due to a recent surgical procedure." UM alum Jon Jansen will "fill in" next to play-by-play announcer Jim Brandstatter. Jansen has been a member of UM's radio team this season "in pregame, halftime and postgame roles." Brandstatter said that Dierdorf is "expected to make a full recovery, and "plans to return in two weeks" for UM's home game against Indiana (MLIVE.com, 10/22).

GREEN FLAG: ESPN's Marty Smith, who has been lead NASCAR reporter for SportsCenter and other platforms since '07, has agreed to a new contract and will remain with the net as a bureau reporter. Smith will travel from his base in Charlotte to cover a variety of sports for the network, including NASCAR, pro and college football and basketball, and other sports. He also will continue to write for ESPN.com on NASCAR and other topics (ESPN).
