Univ. of Texas men's basketball coach RICK BARNES' $2.6M per-year contract extension from '17-19 includes a buyout clause that would enable the school to "get out of the deal for less than a year's salary at any point before it expires." If Barnes is fired before April '15, UT would owe him $1.75M. That amount drops to $1.5M before April '16, to $1M before April '17, and to $500,000 before April '18 (MYSANANTONIO.com, 10/21).

OWNERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES: Cavaliers Owner DAN GILBERT was a guest host on CNBC this morning and Mavericks Owner MARK CUBAN appeared via satellite to discuss his various business investments. Gilbert said to Cuban, "Are you looking forward to the NBA meeting this morning that unfortunately I'm not going to be able to be there. Are you going?" Cuban replied, "You're not!? Then I'm not going." Gilbert said NBA Commissioner ADAM SILVER "will probably fine me," but "not as much as his predecessor would have." Cuban laughed and said, "Yeah, right" ("Squawk Box," CNBC, 10/22).

COURT REPORT
: The N.Y. Supreme Court yesterday reinstated the slander lawsuit filed by two former Syracuse Univ. ball boys against head coach JIM BOEHEIM. BOBBY DAVIS and MIKE LANG claim that Boeheim slandered them in '11 by "calling them liars out for money when they accused" longtime assistant coach BERNIE FINE of molesting them as children (AP, 10/21)....The NCAA has dropped Pennsylvania Gov. TOM CORBETT from its lawsuit challenging a state law that limits where $60M in Penn State Univ. fine money can be spent (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 10/22).

BACK TO SCHOOL: The Univ. of Miami School of Business Administration has developed a new Executive MBA program designed primarily for professional artists and athletes, set to begin in February '15. Because the program is expected to draw many players from the NFL, classes will be held during the league's off-season. The 18-month program consists of six two-week residency modules at the school's main campus in Coral Gables (UM).
