Franchise Notes

Orioles VP/Communications & Marketing Greg Bader said that many fans put down deposits on '15 season tickets "to secure a chance to buy seats for this year's playoff games." While Bader did not offer specific numbers, he said that deposits "came in significantly stronger" than when the Orioles last went to the postseason in '12. Bader: "We certainly have been aggressive during the postseason run in reaching out to potential partners -- those who have been a part of things in the past but maybe not so much in recent years" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/21).

DON'T WALK THE PLANK
: In Pittsburgh, Bob Smizik writes this offseason is a "critical time in Pirates history," as they "have not been at this level of the MLB hierarchy" since ’92. After two straight seasons in the playoffs, there "is no reason to expect a step back" next season "if they are willing to spend." Money from the new MLB TV deal "combined with record-breaking attendance, make the decision to increase payroll" to at least $90M "an absolute must" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 10/22).

YOU MAKE MY HEART SING
: In Minneapolis, Nick Halter reported Wild Owner Craig Leipold "wouldn’t say if he is finally turning a profit" with the franchise. But Leipold did say, "We are really happy with the economics of the team." He said that more than 95% of season-ticket holders renewed for this season, and that new season-ticket packages "more than made up for" the other 5%. New Wild sponsors this year "include Jack Daniel’s and Bremer Bank, plus higher commitments from Allstate, Polaris Industries Inc. and SuperAmerica" (MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/17 issue).
