Duke Partnering With SAP On New Online Basketball Stats Page Featuring Historical Data

Duke Univ. in partnership with SAP will launch a new online men’s basketball stats page that will feature historical team and player data, similar to the stats package that SAP produces for the NBA. SAP is making a formal announcement about the new product for Duke basketball today at the TechEd && d-code show in Las Vegas. The partnership with Duke represents SAP’s first venture in college athletics, and the company intends to seek more clients for this type of interactive stats presentation that updates in real time and provides historical data. In the case of Duke, the data goes back to 1906. The Duke basketball data presentation will live on the school’s official athletic website, GoDuke.com, and it is expected to launch in the coming weeks, just in time for basketball season. SAP Global VP/Strategic Sales Frank Wheeler said, "This is a first-of-its-kind fan engagement in the college space. It really brings this kind of data, both current and historical, to life.” SAP’s NBA page at Stats.NBA.com features statistical leaders, shot charts, and other intuitive sections on player movement and ball movement. The presentation of Duke’s stats and historical data will grow as more information is added, but it will enable Duke to instantly compare historical data to track trends such as most consecutive double-doubles or the percentage of made three-pointers compared to two-point field goals. SAP is working with NTT Data on the web application. Students in Duke’s MBA program at the Fuqua School of Business led the project and worked with Duke Dir of Digital Media Ryan Craig. Former Duke SID Curtis Snyder, who worked at the school from '03-08, compiled the Blue Devils’ historical data during his time at the school. He now works at the Univ. of Colorado.
