For What Ales You: Trio Of PGA Tour Members Launching New Craft Beer Company

Golfers Graeme McDowell, Keegan Bradley and Freddie Jacobson are “teeing up a line of new craft beers targeting golfers” with the help of Florida-based brewer The Brew Hub, according to Mike Snider of USA TODAY. The three have “formed a company," GolfBeer Brewing, "for the venture." Three beers -- G-Mac's Celtic Style Pale Ale, Keegan Bradley's New England Style Lager and Freddie Jacobson's Scandinavian Style Blonde Ale -- will “initially be available this month on draft at select Florida golf courses and on-site restaurants and country clubs.” The beers, which are each "between 4.5% and 5% alcohol by volume,” will be available "in cans in December and bottles during the first quarter of 2015." Distribution will “expand to grocery stores, bars and other restaurants in Florida and then to other regions.” Golf and alcoholic beverages have “gone hand in hand for years,” but this is “the first swing at beer for golfers.” Jacobson said, “For some reason, all the golfers previously have always ended up in wine, and we just felt there was a natural gap with the golf-beer connection.” Snider notes Jacobson “hatched the idea after talking with friend and business associate Patrik Waxin, a founder of the National Golf Course Restaurant Association.” Jacobson: "We wanted to create a product that was really refreshing and drinkable, a craft beer for the outdoor living we participate in all the time" (USA TODAY, 10/21). Jacobson said all three beers "are very drinkable." He said, "I would call them refreshing craft beers. They're not super strong or heavy." They are crafted on the "concept of being out in the sun" or "on the golf course." Jacobson noted they worked with The Brew Hub in Lakeland on developing the beers "over the last 18 months or so." Jacobson: "It was a nice, fun process, and kind of a little bit surreal now to have it all here. You work on something for two years and it feels like, 'Is it ever going to happen?'" ("Morning Drive," Golf Channel, 10/21).
