Names In The News

While U.S. Sen. CHARLES SCHUMER (D-N.Y.) last week did attend the Bills' first game in the PEGULA era, it is what he "did behind the scenes that got him there." Schumer for years "has been lobbying NFL team owners to keep the Bills in Buffalo after the inevitable passing of the team’s founder, RALPH WILSON JR." Once Wilson "passed away on March 25, the senator inserted himself into the Bills’ sales process, speaking with prospective buyers and settling on the Pegulas as the Bills’ best hope -- and then calling several NFL team owners to make that point perfectly clear." While it "might seem odd for the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate to play such a central role in the sale" of an NFL team, Schumer said that it is "something he had to do to properly serve the western corner of the state." Schumer: "Had the Bills left Buffalo, it would have been a dagger to the heart and the soul of the city" (BUFFALO NEWS, 10/19).

ON THE DOCKET: The sons of former heavyweight boxing champion HASIM RAHMAN "have sued FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR., Mayweather Promotions and Showtime in Clark County District Court regarding sparring sessions at Mayweather's gym that were a part of the 'All Access' series." HASIM RAHMAN JR. and SHARIF RAHMAN "sued for battery, tortious assault, false imprisonment, negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention and unjust enrichment" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 10/17)....A federal jury on Friday found Basketball HOFer SCOTTIE PIPPEN’s onetime financial adviser, ROBERT LUNN, “guilty of bank fraud for a variety of schemes” that included taking out a $1.4M loan in Pippen’s name that he “used to pay off personal debts” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/18).

CHARITY STRIPE: The Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund and Bears DE JARED ALLEN's Homes For Wounded Warriors foundation teamed up to remodel a house for former U.S. Army Ranger CORY REMSBURG, "five years after the roadside bomb blast that left him fighting for his life" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/20)....Steelers CB WILLIAM GAY "helped the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh launch its national RUSafe App, which is designed to connect potential victims of domestic violence to [an] emergency helpline" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 10/18).

NAMES: President GEORGE W. BUSH attended Saturday's Cincinnati-SMU game in Dallas and "performed a ceremonial pre-game coin toss." He "spoke to UC players and staffers in the locker room before the game." He also spoke to SMU before the game (CINCINNATI.com, 10/19)....Former Bills radio broadcaster VAN MILLER was inducted into the team’s Wall of Fame during halftime of yesterday’s game against the Vikings. Miller was the play-by-play voice of the Bills for 37 seasons -- from the team’s “inception and through the 2003 season, with a short break in the 1970s” (BUFFALO NEWS, 10/20)....Boxer MANNY PACQUIAO started yesterday’s game for the newly formed KIA Sorento of the Philippine Basketball Association, but “played only seven minutes and committed two turnovers in his team's 80-66 win over the Blackwater Elite” (AP, 10/19)….NASCAR driver KYLE BUSCH and his wife, SAMANTHA, are “expecting their first child” in May (FOXSPORTS.com, 10/18).
