Franchise Notes

In New Jersey, John Brennan notes the Devils, "who for the past three years have offered a free weekly fantasy hockey game on their website," yesterday announced a partnership with Hotbox Sports that "will permit the company to promote a Devils-related game that allows for entry fees of $5 and bigger prizes." The New Jersey-based company "already was providing a free fantasy sports game for the Devils and nearly a dozen other NHL teams and a dozen more teams in other sports." The for-pay version "comes with league-imposed guidelines," including that it "not be directly promoted on the Devils’ website." The Hotbox Sports sponsorship deal "will include promotion of the company by the Devils inside Prudential Center in Newark, and on media and social channels" (Bergen RECORD, 10/16).

BUZZ CITY BOSS: USA TODAY's Sam Amick wonders if Hornets Owner Michael Jordan has "finally become an effective boss." It is "certainly starting to seem that way." Jordan is "less controlling ... and more selective about when and where to make the most of the one-of-a-kind influence that comes with being MJ." Because he "remains such a powerful part of today's basketball culture, it's enough to make you wonder where he can take it from here." From "picking the right front office folks and coaching staff to deciding how to maximize one's voice within that group, there's a delicacy to it that Jordan has been mastering of late" (USA TODAY, 10/14).

DOES IT ADD UP? In L.A., Helene Elliott asked of prospective Coyotes Owner Andrew Barroway's recent deal to purchase a majority stake in the franchise, "What was Barroway thinking? Look at the math." IceArizona, the current majority ownership group, paid $170M "to buy the franchise from the NHL." Barroway paid about $155M "for a 51% stake in a team whose losses" reportedly topped $20M last season and "won't make money this season." He "must see future profits there, through growing league revenue, or somewhere else." The "immediate impact should be positive for the Coyotes." Part of Barroway's initial investment "will go into the franchise, perhaps boosting the payroll, and part as a return to shareholders" (L.A. TIMES, 10/14).
