Media Notes

In Montreal, Jack Todd writes in the "brave new (read hopelessly confusing) NHL broadcast world," the Canadiens "appear on such a smorgasbord of channels that you need an advanced degree in analytics to figure out where they’re playing on a given night." Todd: "Forcing your fan base to play hide-and-seek to find your product doesn’t strike me as the smartest move." When one of the nation’s biggest providers -- Rogers Communications -- "happens also to own the national broadcast rights (not to mention a share of the Maple Leafs) you know that you’re going to play cable roulette every night of the week and you’re going to pay through the nose for the privilege" (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 10/14).

HITTING THE LINKS: In DC, Dan Steinberg noted former CSN Mid-Atlantic and WTTG-Fox reporter Lou Holder recently joined the Back9Network "after more than a decade covering" DC sports. Holder will host Back9's "The Turn," which is the net's "flagship program." Holder "has recently been working for Redskins.com and for the team’s game-day programming at FedExField, in addition to working as a freelancer at CSN." He will "continue to work for the Redskins during home games for the immediate future" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 10/13).

DOWN ON THE MAT: AD AGE's Jeanine Poggi noted the WWE Network "attracted 700,000 subscribers in its first four months," but subscriber additions "have slowed down since 'WrestleMania' in April." WWE said that the net between April and August "posted just 33,000 net additions, with over 100,000 subscribers not even making it through the six-month commitment period due to 'payment issues.'" The company previously said that the platform "will need to have at least 1 million paying customers to be profitable, predicting it would hit that mark by year-end" (ADAGE.com, 10/13).
