Minding My Business With SNY VP/Marketing & Business Development Marie DeParis

Name: Marie DeParis

Position: SportsNet N.Y. VP/Marketing & Business Development

Where I'm from: Maple Shade, N.J.

Where I call home: Allendale, N.J.

Focusing on right now: A multi-media campaign in the called "House of Fans."

DeParis said she admires Mark Cuban's honesty and
innovation as an exec
Best advice: When I was an intern in college, a concert promoter in Pittsburgh told me, “You’re never too big to pass the cheese.” We had a reception party going on and nobody was serving anybody, so he took the tray and started serving the guests. If I’m asking somebody to do something, I need to know that I would do it myself or that I’d be willing to do it myself.

A must for a new hire: You need to be able to communicate orally and in written form, and with entry-level positions, that sometimes become a challenge.

Exec I most admire: Mavericks Owner MARK CUBAN. I think that he’s progressive, honest, and innovative. And I really enjoy "SHARK TANK." He goes from being an owner of an NBA franchise to being human and smart and coming across well on a television entertainment program.

Best book I've read this year: "Five Days at Memorial" by SHERI FINK, about a hospital that went through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I thought it was fascinating for several reasons. I had visited New Orleans the year after the hurricane hit. I drove through the ninth ward and I had never seen anything like it. Also, I had a home that was hit by Hurricane Sandy so it hit home with me. It's a really good book about the decisions people make, and whether people should be deciding when to cut off care.

First thing in the morning: I read the N.Y. Daily News on my iPad. I've actually crossed over; I don’t read the physical paper anymore, just on my tablet.

Talking tech: My iPad has been changed everything because I do all of our on-air promotions on it. I'll also view spots on the tablet, and watch baseball on it.

Must-have music: I'm a Jersey Shore girl, so definitely BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. I've been to at least a dozen of his concerts. I also like to go back to '80s music, and I love THE CLASH.

Food for thought: I found this unassuming little place in the strangest place: Right in the middle of Times Square. It’s on 8th Ave. right between 42nd and 43rd and it’s called Qi. There’s no big sign or anything, I was walking by it every day. It’s the most serene Asian restaurant in the middle of all this hustle and bustle.

How I unwind: Exercise. I don’t know if it’s pleasurable or not, but it’s certainly how I unwind. I usually do cardio and weights and a variety of different things. I usually have the best ideas when I’m on a treadmill or on a bike.

Day in the life: I’m in charge of all marketing for the SNY brand, and in charge of affiliate relations. Being in New York and in 14 million homes, we have a lot of distributors both in our territory and out of market and my responsibility is the relationship with these distributors, doing cooperative marketing programs and making sure they get the value that they should get by putting us on their network. No real carriage negotiations going on right now; we’re in a pretty good spot. We don’t have renewals coming up till next year.
