NHL Nearing Sellout For Kings-Sharks Outdoor Game At Levi's Stadium Without Price Drops

The final 5,000 tickets for the Feb. 21 Kings-Sharks NHL Coors Light Stadium Series game at Levi's Stadium "went on sale Thursday afternoon, with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman predicting a sellout of the 68,500 seats available for the game," according to David Pollak of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Ticket prices "range from $65 to $350 and were initially made available only to season-ticket holders" for the two teams, as well as those "holding personal seat licenses with the 49ers at Levi's Stadium." Bettman acknowledged that the outdoor game for Northern California "was assured as soon as the NHL saw how well things went last Jan. 25 at Dodger Stadium" for Ducks-Kings. Bettman: "We knew the Sharks wanted it, and they kept saying, 'If you can do it there, you can do it here.' As soon as we saw what an incredible success that game was, there was no question we were coming." Pollak notes it "took a drop in some ticket prices before the game at 54,000-seat Dodger Stadium sold out," a tactic that "wasn't necessary" for the upcoming Levi's Stadium game. The NHL "had considered playing the Feb. 21 game at AT&T Park." But Bettman said that the decision to hold it in Levi's Stadium "was only in part because of its larger capacity" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 10/3). Bettman repeatedly said that the league expected Levi's Stadium to "fill up fast" for Kings-Sharks. Asked whether he had initial concerns about ticket sales for the game, Bettman said, "If this were the first year we were doing it and nobody knew what to expect in California, maybe. But when we put the tickets on sale for the first Winter Classic in Buffalo, we were amazed we sold out in 18 minutes." He added, "Now that people have had an opportunity to see these games -- the Winter Classic, the Coors Stadium Series -- people want to be a part of it" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 10/2). The AP's Josh Dubow noted Bettman is "confident the ice will hold up just fine in February" at Levi's Stadium, "as long as there's no rain storm" (AP, 10/2).

CANADA'S CALLING: In Ottawa, John Willing reports Mayor Jim Watson met with Bettman on Wednesday "about the prospects of getting an outdoor game" in '17. The brief meeting "happened at the Chateau Laurier" in Ottawa. Watson told Bettman that the city "wants to hold an outdoor game at TD Place during Canada's 150th birthday year" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/3).
