Former MLBer PEDRO MARTINEZ last night accepted an award at the 29th annual Great Sports Legends Dinner benefiting The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. Martinez was honored along with Basketball HOFer HAKEEM OLAJUWON, Pro Football HOFer WARREN SAPP, CBS' BILL COWHER and "other luminaries." The event "draws sports legends and celebrities galore" in support of Pro Football HOFer NICK BUONICONTI and his son, MARC, who sustained a spinal cord injury three decades ago during a college football game (MLB.com, 9/29).

MEDIA MOGULS: After Turner announced that it is "shedding hundreds of jobs," company President DAVID LEVY traveled to the Ryder Cup in Scotland "in style -- by private jet, and once there, he 'entertained clients who were flown around the courses in helicopters,'" according to a source cited by the N.Y. POST's PAGE SIX. Turner is "slashing 550 jobs to free up cash." A turner spokesperson said, "For security reasons, we don’t comment on executive travel, but we’ll confirm that we entertained Turner advertisers at the Ryder Cup, as we have in previous years" (N.Y. POST, 9/30)....Knicks Owner and MSG Chair JAMES DOLAN, whose family owns Cablevision, believes the "cable programming bundle will fall by the wayside thanks to advances such as Netflix." Dolan: "As we start to see more (companies like) Netflix, they’ll siphon away from the bundle but you might see programming you like go away" (N.Y. POST, 9/30)....News Corp. Chair & CEO RUPERT MURDOCH's total compensation rose to $29.2M "for the 12 months that ended June 30." That is "up about 1% from the prior year," when Murdoch received $28.9M (LATIMES.com, 9/29).

NAMES: Myrtle Beach Pelicans VP & GM ANDY MILOVICH was named the '14 Calvin Falwell Exec of the Year for the Single-A Carolina League (Pelicans)....The NFL Jets yesterday presented a $250,000 check to the Borough of Florham Park for its Elm Street Recreation Complex football field. The Jets and the N.Y. IN MEMORY: Boxing promoter DAN GOOSSEN died yesterday "of complications from liver cancer" (L.A. TIMES, 9/30). Goossen "would have been 65 on Friday," and "did not learn of his illness until Labor Day." He had surgery "a few days later" at an L.A.-area hospital and "never left before his death" (ESPN.com, 9/29).
