Feather In Their Caps: Orioles Merchandise Sales Spike After Clinching AL East Crown

On the heels of the Orioles winning the AL East, the team's merchandise sales "are soaring" heading into the MLB postseason, according to Natalie Sherman of the Baltimore SUN. Data from SportsOneSource shows that Orioles merchandise sales "leaped 80 percent in the last four weeks." In the last 13 weeks, sales "rose 33 percent compared with the same period" last year. Orioles VP/Communications & Marketing Greg Bader said that September sales on MLB.com and Orioles.com "are up 854 percent compared with the same month last year." Fanatics President of Merchandising Jack Boyle said that the Orioles "represent the No. 1-selling" MLB team on the site "for gear that is not affiliated with individual players over the last four weeks." Compared with the team's most recent trip to the postseason in '12, Orioles merchandise sales this season "are up 60 percent." Boyle said that the Orioles "come in second" when factoring in sales of player gear on Fanatics.com. SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell said that lower expectations at the start of the season "likely dampened Orioles' sales, but the gap is starting to close." Since the team clinched earlier this month, apparel promoting their AL East title "has been the most popular, with the inventory of T-shirts and hats running low" at some retail locations (Baltimore SUN, 9/30).
