Are Patriots Becoming Content With Just Making Playoffs And Not Winning Super Bowls?

The Patriots have become a franchise that "just wants ... to get in" the playoffs and is not necessarily "trying to win championships," according to ESPN's Trent Dilfer. They are "trying to fill their seats, they're trying to make money, they're trying to put a good enough product out there that is competitive, that maybe they get into the tournament." Dilfer: "If you look at the New England Patriots, after the championship run, that's how they've drafted, that's how they've handled free agency." They have not tried to "attack a championship and say, 'We have Tom Brady, we need to take some chances to go win one more.'" ESPN's Steve Young asked if the Patriots are "that tired of winning of Super Bowls that they're okay with (just) getting into the tournament? It sure looks that way." He added, "How do you look Tom Brady in the eye and let [G] Logan Mankins go and they say to him, 'It's for the team, it's for the cap.'" Young: "What you're saying is, 'We're transitioning, Tom. Hopefully it works out, hopefully the end of your career goes okay. But it's not about you.' I've got to believe it needs to be about Tom Brady while he's still here" ("Monday Night Countdown," ESPN, 9/29).
