ManU Considers Midweek Friendlies Overseas During EPL Season To Curb Revenue Drop

EPL club Manchester United "is looking at playing lucrative friendlies overseas to fill the midweek void left by the absence of European football this season" and the team's early exit from the Capital One Cup, according to Rob Harris of the AP. The team forecasts a 10% "drop in revenue" in '14-15 after failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. ManU now has "just one midweek Premier League match" before the end of '14, and "just three in the first three months" of '15. The Middle East "would be the most likely destination" for the friendlies. ManU manager Louis Van Gaal during the team's preseason U.S. tour said that the "obligations to sponsors and distances the team has to travel was 'not very positive for a good preparation' for the Premier League campaign." But ManU Group Managing Dir Richard Arnold said that there is "no disagreement with Van Gaal over the possibility of taking on more commercial ventures." Meanwhile, the club yesterday announced that Abengoa would be the club's first "sustainable technology partner." The company will work with ManU to make the club "more environmentally friendly" (AP, 9/29).
