Weekend Plans With Yahoo Sports VP/Group Leads Ken Fuchs: BBQ, Beach, Bears

With fantasy football season in full swing, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance and Product Partnerships VP/Group Lead KEN FUCHS is immersed in the world of mock drafts, waiver wire claims, trade proposals and smack talk. But the L.A. resident never misses an opportunity to take his three kids boogie boarding or play beach football near his home in Pacific Palisades. Fuchs said, “We live really close to the beach and if our family is visiting from cold weather they often just want to get a little ocean time. For families with kids we go to Disneyland or some of the tourist attractions here. There is just so much to do in L.A. from hiking to paddleboarding to surfing to going to a Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers or Kings game.”

THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND
: This Friday, we are having a big barbecue at our house. We like to have a lot of people over to swim and the kids all hang out. We have a big indoor/outdoor house, so it tends to be a regular occurrence with a lot of our friends. I just love having the house where people feel comfortable to come over and stay for hours. I like to grill skirt steaks and corn on the cob, as well as asparagus and other vegetables. It is really easy to do on a great summer night.

I’LL RIDE THE WAVE
: I think the part of my life of sleeping in on weekends is over. I actually enjoy getting up early now and getting in a workout that gets the day going. Typically, Saturdays are taken up by sports with the kids. They are 8, 7 and 4; so its soccer, flag football, baseball or basketball. On Sundays in the summer, we love to go to the beach. My son and I are also learning to surf together. On Saturday mornings, we have a surf lesson that we have been trying to hit pretty regularly. I am a huge Chicago sports fan for better or for worse, mostly for worse. I am always striving to catch the Bears game on NFL Sunday Ticket.

WHERE IT TAKES ME
: One of the great things about L.A. is that it is really easy to escape. We went to Palm Springs a couple of weeks ago. It was real hot, but it is beautiful out there. We also go to Santa Barbara and San Diego. In the winter we love going to Mammoth Mountain for skiing. My wife and I both love the sport. We get all over the mountain as much as possible. The kids go to ski school and are really starting to get into the sport. So we ski with them and have a great meal or just hang out in the hot tub and the pool.

CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE
: My wife is a tremendous cook; she makes a really good pulled brisket, and she makes really good seafood dishes. But she is mostly a vegetarian, so she makes incredible vegan-type dishes as well. We love to go to Tavern in Brentwood and sit at the bar and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer. They’ve got an amazing burger. We tend to gravitate towards noisy, chattery restaurants with really good food where you get to know the bartender. We go to Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, which is a beautiful hotel on the water.

LEARNING TO FLY
: When I am traveling, I catch up on e-mails and presentations or anything that I have ongoing that I need to check off my list. When I need a break, I tend to read a book on my iPhone, which is maybe not the optimal way to do it. I can whip through it pretty quick. I definitely have my earphones on as well. I like a little bit of everything. I love jazz and bands like VAMPIRE WEEKEND, THE KOOKS, and THE STROKES. It’s usually alternative rock but I bounce all over the place on Pandora. My favorite place when I am traveling is ABC Kitchen in N.Y. A friend of mine started as the head chef. It is just classic, clean, well-cooked food in a great environment.

COME TOGETHER
: My guilty pleasure is that I still like to have a paper copy of the N.Y. Times on Sunday mornings. My wife and I will pass that around between the two of us. We have a ritual where we go out on Sunday nights. It is kind of our way of extending the weekend. We go out between 5-6pm and typically go to yoga or work out somewhere. Afterwards, we go to dinner and then we get ice cream. We get to catch up with each other before the week starts cranking after a hectic weekend of running around with the kids. It is the time where we kind of step back.
