49ers-Backed Tech Startup Begins Marketing To Other Stadiums, Entertainment Venues

VenueNext, which the 49ers formed to "create a new mobile app for fans attending games" at Levi's Stadium, announced plans on Thursday to "market its technology to stadiums and entertainment venues around the world," according to Benny Evangelista of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The all-purpose app "lets fans order and pay for food, find the shortest bathroom lines and watch replays." But Creative Strategies President Tim Bajarin said that VenueNext also has "developed technology that could be used in every venue where large crowds gather." Evangelista notes the 49ers in '12 "began assembling an in-house team of 25 engineers and designers with one main goal -- to build the app in time for the Santa Clara stadium’s first season." But the app technology, which "could connect smartphone-wielding fans to all the features and services offered, began drawing so much interest from the operators of other sports and entertainment venues that the team realized it was essentially incubating a tech venture." VenueNext "has financial backing" from Aurum Partners, an investment arm whose partners are 49ers CEO Jed York, President Paraag Marathe and venture capitalist Brano Perkovich. VenueNext co-Founder & COO John Paul said, "We think there's a big opportunity right now. Every stadium in the world is looking to upgrade their infrastructures." Paul said that potential clients have "monitored VenueNext's progress, but declined to name any" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 9/19).
