Minding My Business With NWSL Houston Dash Managing Dir Brian Ching

Name: Brian Ching

Position: NWSL Houston Dash Managing Director

Age: 36

Where I'm from: Hale'iwa, Hawaii

Where I call home: Houston

Focusing on right now: Doubling the Dash's attendance next season.

Ching spends his free time on the water, hanging out with his wife or catching fish
Best advice: Find out what drives you and what motivates you. That is what’s going to push you to succeed -- when you find that out about yourself.

A must for a new hire: Someone who is motivated to succeed, and works hard. I always felt like hard work can take you a long way. Also, a willingness to learn. I wouldn't want to hire someone who thinks they know it all.

Exec I most admire: My father in law, U.S. Capital Advisors Managing Partner & CEO PATRICK MENDENHALL. He gets the most out of his employees and has a good time while he’s doing it. I think his personality really kind of gets people motivated around him to work hard and he gets the most out of his employees. He never really stresses out about things and I think that’s definitely an admirable quality.

Best book I've read this year: Dynamo President CHRIS CANETTI recommended reading BILL WALSH’s "Finding the Winning Edge." It was about leading an organization and what it takes to lead one. That’s something that I had no real experience on; it’s totally different than being a captain on a team. So the book helped me to learn how to get the most out of your employees and how to be most effective in business.

First thing in the morning: I turn on CNBC. One of the things I love to do is to watch the market and learn about it. I also listen to CNBC Radio on the way in to work.

Talking tech: The smartphone has changed everything, because you can do business from anywhere. It's great to be able to conduct my business from the soccer field when I need to.

Must-have music: I’m a big fan of LINKIN PARK, BOB MARLEY, and -- being here in Texas -- I’m starting to get a little more acclimated to its music.

Food for thought: One of my favorites is Benjy’s. It’s an American fusion that’s local, healthy with great food. Just one of those original places that I found when I came to Houston, and I’ve just always enjoyed their food and philosophy on food. The menu is always changing so I’m always trying new things.

How I unwind: I love to fish. I need to go with CLINT DEMPSEY one of these days when he gets back into town. We’ve talked about it a few times. Fishing or hanging out with my wife. We enjoy each other and just kind of being home together.

Day in the life: What I didn’t realize when taking this job is, as good as you have it as an athlete, that transition to one where you have a lot more responsibilities -- you have a responsibility to put in a lot more work than you used to. I talked to EDDIE ROBINSON, WADE BARRETT, STEVE ALSTON and a number of guys who have kind of gone through the transition. I think that’s really helped me adjust to a new role. Because it’s a big life change and it’s not easy at times, so the more people you have to lean on, the easier it gets.
