Cleveland-Based Companies Look To Put New LeBron James Banner Back Up On Building

Cleveland-based companies Gigantic Media and Sherwin-Williams "are seeking approval for a banner dedicated" to Cavaliers F LeBron James, who is shown on it "with his arms stretched, once again, across the eastern face of the Landmark Office Towers," according to Michelle Jarboe McFee of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The new image "harkens back, of course, to the iconic Nike Inc. banner of James that greeted drivers entering downtown" until mid-'10. James on the new banner "still stands beneath a puff of chalk dust, acting out a pre-game ritual." Jarboe McFee: "But this time, he's not alone. He's facing a crowd, instead of downtown. There's no script. Just a simple Nike swoosh." Cleveland "limits downtown billboards, making it difficult for property owners to erect new signs." The city "generally has treated large-scale banners on the Sherwin-Williams complex as 'civic images,' something more akin to commercial artwork than a billboard" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 9/17).

BRON'S DOZEN: The AP's Anne Peterson noted James yesterday was at Nike HQ "for the unveiling of his new shoe, the LeBron 12." It "is his first new shoe with Nike since he returned this summer to the Cavs." The shoe "features multicolored hexagonal cushions on the soles." It "retails for $200 and will start hitting stores next month" (AP, 9/16). In Portland, Mike Rogoway notes the shoe "has an aqua-green mesh, an orange border on the black Nike Swoosh, and pastel hexagons on the sole." But James said that this is "not necessarily the color scheme he'll be wearing on opening day -- the NBA has strict guidelines that mute colors on uniforms and shoes" (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/17).

POINTS OF CONTACT: Cedar Point amusement park yesterday announced that it is "partnering with James’ charitable arm, and next spring the park will host many of the children helped by the James Family Foundation." The park said that it "reached a deal on a multiyear partnership that includes Cedar Point hosting children from the foundation’s Wheels for Education program and Akron I PROMISE Network." However, the park "did not announce a name change for any of its coasters" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 9/17). In Cleveland, Susan Glaser notes yesterday's announcement "brings to a conclusion the controversial offer made by Cedar Point" two days before James announced his decision to return to the Cavaliers, when the park "offered to name one of its 17 coasters" after him if he returned to the Cavs (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 9/17).
