Mickelson To Design New Course In Calgary That Many Hope Can Land Canadian Open

Phil Mickelson will be part of the design team for a new golf course in Calgary that many people believe "will bring the PGA Tour's Canadian Open to the Stampede City," according to Randy Sportak of the CALGARY SUN. The nearly 8,000-yards-long Mickelson National Golf Club of Canada will be "built by the Windhall Golf Group and part of a 3,500-home community of Harmony in Springbank." Calgary's altitude "makes the need for extreme length to lure a PGA Tour event." It is slated to include "four par-5 holes of 630 yards or more." The course will be just the fifth for Phil Mickelson Design; PMD President Steve Loy said that the company has "turned down more than 20 opportunities." Sportak notes having a "big-name designer for a new course ... is no surprise." However, the involvement of Mickelson's company and having the World Golf HOFer's name on it "is a coup" (CALGARY SUN, 9/17). Loy said that Mickelson "doesn't plan on being one of these absentee landlords, lending his name, his fame to this new project, and not much else." Loy: "I can tell you this: Phil's going to be part of this community. So the last thing he wants to do is not have his name on it with his brand." In Calgary, George Johnson notes the "aim of Mickelson National Canada is to create a golfing experience daunting enough to coax a Canadian Open back west ... but to be family-friendly enough to the Harmony community and high handicappers" (CALGARY HERALD, 9/17).

THE NAME GAME: In Calgary, Eric Francis noted the course was "initially slated to be called Copithorne Club" and was "originally contracted to be designed" by NBC's Johnny Miller and Calgary golfer Stephen Ames. However, the course was given to Mickelson "because of his star-power, likeability and interest in the project." Construction is set to begin "within the next few months" with it opening "as early as fall '17" (CALGARYSUN.com, 9/16). Windmill Golf Group Managing Partner Barry Ehlert said, "Phil was actually the one who came to us and said ... 'I don't want to over-step my bounds, but if there's a way to get the name Mickelson in the golf course, we'd love to do that'" (CALGARYSUN.com, 9/16).
