Belichick Among NFL Coaches Frustrated With Sideline Tablets, Wireless Network Connections

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was "clearly frustrated" during the team's season-opening loss to the Dolphins, as his Microsoft Surface tablet "kept losing its Internet connection, leaving Belichick unable to exchange images he and his coaches rely on to make in-game adjustments," according to Callum Borchers of the BOSTON GLOBE.  Belichick: "It’s probably less dependable than the (printed) pictures. ... I’d say every game that we’ve used them in there have been times where it works fine. There are other times where you lose the connection and you don’t have it. I’m sure that’s probably true of most other teams, too. At least other coaches that I’ve talked to made the same type of comments." But NFL Corporate Communications Manager Joanna Hunter "insisted the league’s new system worked fine" during Patriots-Dolphins. Hunter: "We had no sideline Wi-Fi connectivity issues on either sideline in Miami on Sunday." She added the NFL "will continue to monitor connectivity and address any issues as they develop." A Dolphins spokesperson said that the team's coaches "reported no problems." With service interruptions "rendering their tablets useless at times, Patriots coaches could be seen reverting to the old system of printing aerial photos on the sideline and filing them in three-ring binders." The NFL’s wireless network for the Surface tablets "is different from the ones many teams, such as the Patriots, have installed in stadiums for fans to use" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/14).
