NFL's TV Partners See Mixed Results With Ratings For Opening Week

Week 1 of the NFL season was a mixed bag for ratings/viewership. Fox’ national window on Sunday, which featured 49ers-Cowboys, led all telecasts with a 15.7 final rating and 28.0 million viewers. That figure is down from a 16.6 rating and 28.5 million viewers last year, when Fox set a record for its Week 1 national window (featured Packers-49ers). The late window telecast will still be the best audience for any program on TV since the Academy Awards in March. Fox' regionalized early window on Sunday finished with an 8.2 rating and 14.1 million viewers, down from a 9.0 rating and 14.7 million viewers last year, but still the net's third-best Week 1 regional window audience on record. NBC drew a 13.9 final rating and 23.7 million viewers for the Colts-Broncos “SNF” opener, down from a 15.0 rating and 25.4 million viewers for Giants-Cowboys in ’13. NBC did see an increase for its NFL Kickoff game, which saw the Seahawks win big over the Packers. That game drew a 15.5 rating and 26.9 million viewers, which is the third-best audience for an NFL Kickoff game in the event’s 13-year history. The NFL Kickoff game and the “SNF” opener ranked as TV’s top two primetime shows last week. Meanwhile, ESPN's Week 1 “MNF” doubleheader also saw mixed results. The Giants-Lions game finished with an 8.4 rating and 13.3 million viewers, down sharply from a record-setting 10.1 rating and 16.5 million viewers for the Eagles-Redskins opener last year. Chargers-Cardinals in the late window drew a 7.1 rating and 11.5 million viewers. That audience is flat in rating and up in viewership compared to the 7.1 rating and 11.0 million viewers for Texans-Chargers last year. CBS had the Sunday singleheader window in Week 1, drawing a 9.9 rating and 16.5 million viewers, which is the best viewership for a CBS Week 1 singleheader in 16 years.
