Univ. of Miami President DONNA SHALALA plans to step down in '15, ending a tenure -- which began in '01 -- in which she "raised the school's profile while guiding the athletic department through a controversial move" to the ACC and a "scandal involving a rogue former booster." Sports has "long been a major part of Shalala's life, and it was a major part of her Miami presidency as well." She has been a "regular at Miami games, no matter the sport." She also has "been to World Cup matches, thrown out ceremonial first pitches at Olympic softball games and served" on the BOD for the U.S. Soccer Foundation. Shalala's UM legacy "will be tied to athletics" (AP, 9/8).

NAMES: Cavaliers F LEBRON JAMES and Browns QB JOHNNY MANZIEL are "set to attend a private screening Thursday for 'SURVIVOR'S REMORSE,' a comedy series" for which James is an exec producer. James' agent MAVERICK CARTER "will host the private screening" in Cleveland. The series debuts Oct. 4 on Starz, and other exec producers include Red Sox Chair TOM WERNER. The screening also will "feature a 'conversation' with James, Carter, Werner and Manziel" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 9/9)....Pro Football HOFer TROY AIKMAN will have his No. 8 UCLA jersey retired Nov. 28 (LATIMES.com, 9/8)....ESPN Radio 980 DC’s CHRIS COOLEY was not in the radio booth during Sunday’s Redskins-Texans game “for the first time" since he joined the broadcast team last fall because he is "expecting the birth of his first child" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 9/8).

IN MEMORY: The AP’s CHRISTOPHER DUNCAN, who covered the Texans, Rockets and the Kentucky Derby, “has died at the age of 43.” A cause of death “wasn’t released,” but he had “recently returned to work after a kidney transplant.” Duncan joined the AP’s sports department in ’09 (AP, 9/8)….Former CIAA Commissioner BOB MOORMAN, a “well respected figure in college athletics,” passed away Sunday at his home in Hampton, Va. He held his position with the conference from ’76-89. While commissioner of the CIAA, Moorman served on the NCAA Council, the D-II basketball and football committees, the NCAA Television Committee and “chaired the NCAA Professional Liaison Committee.” He also served as president of the College Division Commissioners Association (Hampton Roads DAILY PRESS, 9/9).
