The team so far has "extended the 90-day negotiation period several times in a case that seems destined for the U.S. Trade and Patent court in Virginia." StinkySocks President PETER MANDERINO said, "The Red Sox’ lawyer made it clear from the beginning they felt the name, StinkySocks, was disparaging of their brand" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/24).

GRIDIRON GOSPEL: In N.Y., Zach Schonbrun examined PHIL STEELE's College Football Preview magazine, which most coaches and analysts consider to "be the last word." The magazine retails "at $12.99, or $9.99 for the digital version," and this year consists of 352 pages. No other magazine "can challenge the overwhelming depth and precision of Steele’s," as his "was No.1 for prediction accuracy" from '04-13. Steele said without providing exact figures that his circulation "has more than doubled from about 200,000" in '04. His influence within the sport "has grown with it" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/24).

LONE RANGER: Former MLB Rangers CEO TOM SCHIEFFER on Saturday "became the 17th member" of the club’s HOF. He "served in the front office" from '90-99. He "oversaw every aspect of Globe Life Park," which opened in '94, as partner-in-charge of ballpark development (DALLASNEWS.com, 8/23).

CHARITY STRIPE: Univ. of Kentucky basketball coach JOHN CALIPARI "gave away" more than $1M combined to 23 charities Sunday during the John Calipari Basketball Fantasy Experience. The charities that "benefited from the fantasy camp and a related auction" received checks "ranging from $5,000 to $100,000" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 8/25)....Braves OFs JUSTIN and B.J. UPTON, along with Rockies P LATROY HAWKINS, Tigers RF TORII HUNTER and Cubs P WESLEY WRIGHT, "contributed $20,000 to help send the parents of the Jackie Robinson West Little League team" to the LLWS. Hawkins "organized the effort by the five players, who are all represented by the same agent, Reynolds Sports" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 8/23).

NAMES: Canucks President of Hockey Operations TREVOR LINDEN is taking part in the Haute Route Alps, "a seven-day, fully supported climbing-fest in the French Alps that will see 500 amateur cyclists take on more than 900 kilometres of mountain terrain and climbing a combined 21,000 metres over 19 iconic ascents" (Vancouver PROVINCE, 8/25)....As part of its ’14 Most Intriguing Lists ahead of the college football season, YAHOO SPORTS released its Most Intriguing People In Suits (And Stripes) list, with Arkansas AD JEFF LONG topping the chart. Long is CFP Chair, the “most pressurized, scrutinized seat in the sport” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/24)....The National Women’s History Museum and its L.A. Regional Council on Saturday hosted a private brunch to honor the achievements of three notable women including ISC Vice Chair & CEO LESA FRANCE KENNEDY (NWHM)....Former Toronto mayoral candidate KAREN STINTZ said that she “would love to replace” outgoing CFL Commissioner MARK COHON (THESTAR.com, 8/22)….The Buccaneers “kicked in $25,000” to the Greenlight Pinellas transit campaign, which “would raise the county's sales tax by a penny, to 8 cents on the dollar, to expand bus service and build a 24-mile light rail system between St. Petersburg and Clearwater” (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 8/23).

: Former Packers announcer TED MOORE, who called games “during the glory years” in the ‘60s, died on Friday at 87. Moore called “games for the Packers, football and basketball games for the University of Wisconsin," and one year called Marquette Univ. basketball games. He broadcast UW basketball for 22 years (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 8/24)….BOB GOGERTY, who “orchestrated public approval and funding” for CenturyLink Field and “cofounded the business-consulting and public-relations firm now known as Gogerty Marriott,” died on Friday at 74 (SEATTLE TIMES, 8/25)….Longtime Univ. of Georgia athletics department employee DAN MAGILL died Saturday night at 93. He won a national championship in tennis, and worked as SID and Bulldog Club Exec Secretary all at the same time (AUGUSTA CHRONICLE, 8/25)….SARA BUCK, who joined the Phillies’ limited partnership that formed in ’81, died on Saturday morning  at 83 (PHILLY.com, 8/24)….Former NASCAR team Owner ED WHITAKER, who won 20 races in what is now the Nationwide Series with HARRY GANT, died Friday at 76 (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.com, 8/22).
