UCLA Plans To Replace Flood-Damaged Pauley Pavilion Court By End Of October

UCLA AD Dan Guerrero in a statement Friday said that the "entire hardwood floor at Pauley Pavilion will be replaced with a 'new state-of-the-art court' -- one that should be ready by the end of October," following last week's campus flooding, according to Jack Wang of the L.A. DAILY NEWS. Collins Court in the John Wooden Center also will "receive a new floor, but it will not be ready until early November." UCLA women's volleyball is slated to begin its home schedule there on Sept. 26, and Guerrero said the athletic department is "currently evaluating all of our options" to find another venue. UCLA officials said that "six facilities were damaged in the flooding." UCLA Assistant AD/Labor Relations Tod Tamberg said that two facilities -- the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center and the Drake Track & Field Stadium -- "were reopened Thursday" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 8/2). The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Sheila Kumar noted eight to 10 inches of water "swamped the floors" of Pauley Pavilion, which had undergone a $134M renovation in '12. The water "caused the wood to buckle and warp." The total cost of the damage to UCLA's campus was "still unclear Friday, but officials expected it to run into the tens of millions of dollars" (WSJ.com, 8/1).
