People & Personalities: Scully Won't Make Decision On '15 Until Late Summer

In L.A., Bill Shaikin reported though Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully has made "no decision about next year and does not plan to do so until later this summer, everything he said Saturday sounded as if he is leaning toward coming back for a 66th season." The 86-year-old Scully said, "My health is good. That's the primary thing. Certainly, my enthusiasm is still there. I feel all the good things you are supposed to feel. I know one thing: Every adult male that I know -- and they're not fans, necessarily -- they say, 'Don't retire.'" Shaikin noted Scully will "consult with his wife and with the Dodgers, in that order." Scully: "I don't want to just be hanging on. That's why I want to watch my work and, if I'm worthy of it, continue" (L.A. TIMES, 6/22).

BLOOD IN THE WATER: Sharks TV analyst Drew Remenda is not coming back next season, and he indicated that he "never asked the basic question that others have focused on: Why?" Remenda: "I thought, 'What's the use of trying to find out what happened besides what they told me, that they wanted to take the broadcast in a different direction.' It doesn't move my life forward to find out." In San Jose, David Pollak noted Remenda "knows his dismissal has angered a lot of Sharks fans," but he is "determined not to fuel the fires with any trace of bitterness" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/21). In Toronto, Steve Simmons sarcastically wrote the Sharks have "discovered the problem" to their lack of playoff success. They "didn't need to fire" GM Doug Wilson or coach Todd McLellan. Simmons: "They fired their television colour commentator. ... Now that should turn things around" (TORONTO SUN, 6/22).

AL TALK: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes YES Network analyst Al Leiter "has good things to tell us about baseball," but he "talks too much." Leiter "talks so much that regardless of what he's saying he risks going unheard." He "drowns analysis that otherwise would be appreciated." Leiter throughout last week's Blue Jays-Yankees series "never gave the game a chance ... to speak for itself." He "jumped it early, relentlessly" (N.Y. POST, 6/23).
