De La Hoya Aims To Keep Golden Boy Relevant After Former CEO Schaefer's Departure

Golden Boy co-Founder & President Oscar De La Hoya said that the resignation of CEO Richard Schaefer will not “derail plans" to keep the company "functioning as a ‘well-oiled machine,’” according to Lance Pugmire of the L.A. TIMES. Saturday night’s fight card at the StubHub Center will mark Golden Boy’s “first major card” since Schaefer "left the company following a rift with De La Hoya to explore other interests -- amid speculation that Schaefer could be angling to return to the sport as head of a different promotional company.” However, the “intrigue is not in the present,” but how the “future will play out as it becomes established which fighters are tied to Golden Boy promotional contracts, and which are bound only” to boxing manager Al Haymon. De La Hoya said that he is “dedicated now to running his business the way he's always longed to.” But Pugmire writes there are “many questions to work through.” Pugmire: “Will Golden Boy continue to promote Haymon fighters, or force them into promotional contracts? What fighters -- Golden Boy’s or Haymon’s -- will fill future Showtime dates?” Many boxing insiders feel De La Hoya is in a “better position than Schaefer in a possible legal battle, but he may ultimately suffer a subtraction of Haymon-managed talent.” De La Hoya said, “There’s no absence, we feel no dent in our armor whatsoever ... we’re continuing to do the best fights possible.” Pugmire notes one of De La Hoya’s “pushes is to do business with fellow promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, whom Schaefer was defiant in no longer promoting fights with” (L.A. TIMES, 6/20).
