Google Embraces World Cup Through Doodles Inspired By Soccer, Brazilian Culture

Google is "creating Doodles specifically" for the '14 FIFA World Cup "live in Sao Paulo every day as the matches are being played," according to Mike Foss of USA TODAY. The doodles, which are the "illustrations that hover over the search bar" on the Google homepage, are being created by Google Doodle team lead Ryan Germick and designer Matthew Cruickshank. While they normally "design country-specific Doodles," the same Doodle is "seen by the entire world" during the World Cup. On Monday, the day of the U.S.' World Cup opener against Ghana, Cruickshank's Doodle "featured two eagles -- cultural icons from both countries -- which laid an egg whenever its team scored." Cruickshank said, "We would probably spend a week or more working on a static illustration. Here we’re actually sometimes doing 10 drawings in that time and up to 100 frames of animation." Germick: "One of the things we love about Doodles is there’s a sensibility that’s personal and simple. And we hope it connects one-on-one." Cruickshank and Germick "traveled to Brazil ahead of the World Cup to get a better understanding of the culture" (USA TODAY, 6/19).
