Network Morning Shows Revel In U.S. Win, Even Comparing It To "Miracle On Ice"

The buzz following the U.S.' 2-1 win over Ghana in its FIFA World Cup opener last night was apparent this morning, as all three network morning shows talked about the match during the opening quarter-hour. ABC's Bob Woodruff, CBS' Elaine Quijano and NBC's Bill Neely all reported live from Brazil this morning, while ESPN studio analyst Alexi Lalas appeared live via satellite on "GMA" to discuss the match (THE DAILY). CBS' Norah O'Donnell noted the U.S. "is in great shape" following the "thrilling victory," and "millions of Americans are celebrating this morning." Quijano noted the Americans "made their mark on soccer's biggest stage." Quijano: "The American faithful made their presence felt in Natal. An estimated 20,000 fans showed up in support" ("CBS This Morning," CBS, 6/17). ABC's Robin Roberts said the victory was a "dramatic game that had the whole nation cheering" ("GMA," ABC, 6/17). NBC's Savannah Guthrie said the game was a "historic and thrilling start" for the U.S., even going so far as to compare it to the famed U.S.-Russia '80 Olympic hockey game. She said, "I think it was one of those 'Do you believe in miracles?' moments at the World Cup." NBC's Matt Lauer said the victory was a "big relief for a lot of the American fans." Neely said, "It was a game and a victory savored throughout America." Back in the studio, NBC's Tamron Hall noted Twitter "was on fire" when U.S. F Clint Dempsey scored less than a minute into the game ("Today," NBC, 6/17).
