A subsidiary of International Speedway Corp. has "purchased the Suburban Extended Stay hotel on Bill France Boulevard" in Daytona Beach -- close to ISC’s planned One Daytona mixed-use development. Volusia County (Fla.) property records show that the subsidiary "bought the hotel" for $4M in a transaction that closed April 22. The hotel is "the second piece of property ISC has purchased" near the proposed $800M development in the past few years. Daytona Int'l Speedway Senior Dir of PR LENNY SANTIAGO wrote in an email that hotel "isn’t currently part of the One Daytona development and it’s too early to speculate on future plans for the property" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 5/9).

BOOK SHELF: In Boston, Bill Nowlin reviews author CLAUDIA WILLIAMS' new book about her father, late Baseball HOFer TED WILLIAMS. The book is a "forthright, uncompromising but loving memoir." There are "Ted books aplenty," but this one "truly stands out, simply because it offers insight no other author could" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/8)....Walmart stores nationwide are now carrying the fictional NICHOLAS SPARKS book, "THE LONGEST RIDE," about a PBR rider. The book, which features rider JORY MARKISS on the cover, is being made into a movie by Fox (Josh Carpenter, Staff Writer).

CHARITY STRIPE: Under Armour is giving $10M to the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center for a breast health program that will "be part of the hospital's recently announced cancer treatment building." The company's pledge is its "largest gift to any organization" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/8)....Former UConn G SHABAZZ NAPIER will appear on Friday night at the UConn Co-Op Book Store to "help raise money to complete the Mansfield Town Square project" (HARTFORD COURANT, 5/9).

NAMES: The Yankees announced that former manager JOE TORRE will "be honored with a plaque" in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park and "have his No. 6 retired" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/9). Torre on Thursday also was inducted into the Milwaukee Braves Honor Roll (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/9)....DEEPAL WANNAKUWATTE, the former owner of the now-defunct World TeamTennis Sacramento Capitals, on Thursday in U.S. District Court pleaded guilty to a single count of wire fraud, and he is now "awaiting a likely 20-year prison term" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 5/9).
