Media Notes

In N.Y., Karen Crouse wrote the view from blimps that are often shown during sports telecasts used to be "all for show, with the focus on producing pretty panoramic pictures." But over the years, the relationship "has deepened and become much richer," with blimp pilots now "considered an integral part of the television crew." CBS Sports Coordinating Producer Lance Barrow said, "I couldn’t imagine putting on a broadcast without it." MetLife blimp pilot Andrew Murray, who flew over the PGA Tour Wells Fargo Championship this past weekend, said, "Golf is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done." Murray: "I love when Tiger’s playing, because then my job is just follow Tiger" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/4).

TWO PEAS IN A POD: In Miami, Greg Cote reported WAXY-FM's "The Dan Le Batard Show" had 1,024,775 downloaded podcasts in April -- the "first time" it has topped the 1 million mark. The show's "upward podcast trend shows a particularly notable spike from December to January, which coincidentally is right around" when Cote "joined the show as a weekly in-studio (usually Tuesdays) co-host" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 5/4).

VICE VERSA: VARIETY's Todd Spangler noted digital media company Vice "is set to launch a sports channel this summer -- promising a journalistic deep-dive into drama on and off the field -- and called out four new series it has in the works." Vice Sports, set to launch in June in time for the '14 FIFA World Cup, "will feature 'Vice World of Sports,' covering the intersection of sports and politics, business and culture, such as the NBA’s expansion to markets worldwide and the 'world cup of reindeer racing'" (VARIETY.com, 5/2).
