Final Ratings: "Sunday Night Baseball" Up Early, While MLB Net Has Record April

ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” is averaging 2.12 million viewers through five games, up 7% from 1.97 million viewers at the same point last year. The gains were fueled by an early Red-Sox Yankees matchup, which drew 2.77 million viewers. There was no Red Sox-Yankees matchup on “SNB” until June last season. That first matchup in June ’13 drew 2.34 million viewers. Meanwhile, MLB Network averaged 267,000 viewers for its game telecasts in April, up 15% from the same time period last season. The net’s “MLB Tonight” show averaged 179,000 viewers, up 39%. Those gains led MLB Network to its most-viewed regular-season month in network history. The net drew 253,000 viewers in primetime during April (+30%), while total-viewership was 126,000 (+48%). During FS1’s first season of broadcasting MLB games, the net is averaging 489,000 viewers through eight telecasts. The April 19 Angels-Tigers game has been the net’s top MLB audience to date, with the 1:00pm ET telecast drawing 668,000 viewers.

The chart below lists final ratings from recent sports telecasts. Figures for ABC were not available at presstime.

The NCAA Championship-winning coach shares his insight with SBJ’s Austin Karp on key hoops issues and why being well dressed is an important part of his success. Also on the show, Poynter Institute senior writer Tom Jones shares who he has up and who is down in sports media. Later, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy talks the latest on ESPN’s CFP extension and who CBS, TNT Sports and ESPN need to make deep runs in the men’s and women's NCAA basketball tournaments.
