Yankees, Dodgers Lead MLB Teams Across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram Metrics

A study by SBJ/SBD that followed fans of MLB teams on social media over three years shows that the Yankees continue to be the biggest brand in baseball. Over that time period, the Yankees have added more than 4.3 million new combined followers across Facebook and Twitter. The Yankees also continue to lead all teams with more than 8 million fans overall. In the past three years, the Red Sox have added almost 2.8 million new fans for second place and the Dodgers have added more than 1.8 million new fans for third. The Giants and Rangers round out the top five, with each having more than 1.5 million additions. The Marlins added the fewest number of new social media followers in that time frame. The official MLB Facebook and Twitter accounts have a total of 8.8 million followers, up 7.3 million from the same point in '11. Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ recent supplanting of the Yankees as the team with the highest payroll in MLB is mirrored by its growth on Instagram. The Dodgers have more than 457,000 followers, which is around 100,000 more than the second-place Yankees. The Giants, Red Sox and Braves round out the top five on Instagram. The official MLB Instagram account has just over 747,000 followers.
