ESPN's CURT SCHILLING yesterday announced that he has cancer. Schilling in a statement said, "I've always believed life is about embracing the gifts and rising up to meet the challenges. We've been presented with another challenge, as I've recently been diagnosed with cancer" (ESPN). In Boston, Steve Buckley writes Schilling's statement was "vague about the nature of the cancer, or when it was diagnosed." It also does not "make mention of what kind of treatment Schilling is under­going, or if it has begun" (BOSTON HERALD, 2/6). Schilling's statement did not say "what his prognosis might be." He is "taking a leave of absence" from ESPN (AP, 2/6).

IN MEMORY: Int'l Tennis HOFer LOUISE BROUGH CLAPP died on Monday in Vista, Calif., at the age of 90. Her "powerful serve-and-volley game propelled her to 35 championships in Grand Slam tennis tournaments of the 1940s and '50s and made her one of the most brilliant doubles players in the women’s game" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/6).
