Geno Smith Defends Signing With Jay Z, Says Rapper Helped Him Through Rough Patch

Jets QB Geno Smith on Thursday said that his agent, Roc Nation Sports Owner Jay Z, "gave him some advice during a recent three-game slump that helped him through it," and added that despite criticism, signing with the entertainer was the "right move for him," according to Brian Costello of the N.Y. POST. Smith: "I talk to Jay a lot. He gave me some good advice. He told me to not take (criticism) personally. It’s not that people don’t like me. It’s not at me. It’s the position that I’m in. Just realize the position that I’m in comes with a lot of scrutiny. You can’t take it personally. You just have to live your daily life." He added of Jay Z' representation, "It’s been great. I think I made the absolute correct choice. Some of the best people I’ve met, great mentors from all areas. They treat me with so much class, my family and everyone. It was definitely a great move." Smith said that there was a "misconception he only chose Jay Z because he thought he would be more marketable with the superstar rapper as his agent." He added, "It’s not really about him helping me as far as marketing goes" (N.Y. POST, 12/27).
