Indiana Univ. Considering $30-40M Renovations To Aging Assembly Hall

Indiana Univ. is considering $30-40M worth of renovations to Assembly Hall because the facility, though "steeped in tradition," is "hamstrung by age and design," according to Zach Osterman of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. School documents show that renovation plans for the arena, which has been the school’s basketball home since '71, "would not alter the current seating configuration." Renovations would include "luxury seating" and a "modern jumbotron." Other upgrades under considerations area "escalators replacing some ramps," remodeled restrooms and concessions stands, "and additional restrooms." IU AD Fred Glass said, "Assembly Hall is one of the most venerable, iconic basketball venues in the country. When the cameras come on, you don't even need to tell us that we're live from Assembly Hall." He added, "Our planning ... is looking at preserving Assembly Hall, breathing life into that building. I think Hoosier fans will be really excited about our plans. They're ambitious." Glass said that he plans to be "ambitious" about a timetable for a renovation. He also emphasized that renovations "would never render Assembly Hall unusable" during basketball season (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 12/8).
