Time Warner Cable Expands Syracuse Univ. Programming After Loss Of Football Games

Central New York's Time Warner Cable Sports Channel has "added several studio shows about Syracuse University football to the lineup, including a pregame and postgame show on game day," according to Brent Axe of the Syracuse POST-STANDARD. When SU joined the ACC, the new TV structure left TWCSC "in a bind," as it is now "difficult for TWCSC to air SU football games." The loss of games "left a hole" on TWCSC to fill on game day. TWCSC responded by "working with IMG, Syracuse's media arm, to add more content about SU football and scheduling more games from other sports at SU such as soccer, volleyball, and field hockey." TWC Senior Dir of Local Sports Programming for New York Steve Arvan said that plans for "an expansion of coverage of SU sports have been in the works for awhile now." He added, "This is something we have thought about and tried to enhance for a period of time. This is based on the idea of the success we have had with our regional sports network in Los Angeles that covers the Lakers." Axe noted the SU programming "goes beyond game day." TWC airs "condensed versions of games on Mondays and Tuesdays," as well as a "weekly studio show with head coach Scott Shafer on Thursdays." The net also will "re-broadcast his Thursday press conference on that day as well." Axe asked, "Can SU fans expect the programming to continue on through basketball season and into the spring?" SU Exec Senior Associate AD & Chief Communications Officer/External Affairs Joe Giansante said, "Yes, these shows will continue, and Time Warner Cable Sports is televising more Olympic sport programming than ever" (SYRACUSE.com, 9/20).
