The National Football Foundation yesterday announced that Florida State Univ. football broadcaster and Buccaneers radio play-by-play man GENE DECKERHOFF will be the recipient of the '13 NFF Chris Schenkel Award. Presented annually since '96, the award recognizes individuals who have had long, distinguished careers broadcasting college football with direct ties to a specific university (NFF). This fall will "mark Deckerhoff's 35th season calling FSU football games." Later this year he will "begin his 39th season calling FSU men's basketball games" (ORLANDOSENTINEL.com, 7/22).
STANDARD-BEARER: In San Diego, Matt Calkins notes ESPN last Tuesday debuted the "LET THEM WEAR TOWELS" documentary on women sports reporters in the locker room. The documentary included "interviews from several women who suffered during that discriminatory period, but left out" journalist JILL LIEBER STEEG. What her addition "would have provided is the voice of the journalist who spearheaded the investigation into PETE ROSE's gambling and became Sports Illustrated's first female NFL writer." It also would have "offered a viewpoint from sportswriting's EDWIN MOSES -- a standout who pulled away from her peers one hurdle at a time" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/21).
NO SOUP FOR YOU! Former MLBer WILLIE RANDOLPH is "one of about 60 people objecting" to a $1.3M settlement that would end the Original Soup Man’s "legal dispute with former investors." The 60 investors are "linked to an earlier and now-bankrupt version of the chain, called Soup Kitchen International." Sources said that Baseball HOFer REGGIE JACKSON also is "an SKI investor, but is siding with the Original Soup Man" (N.Y. POST, 7/23).
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: USA Today's Gary Stoller profiles MLB Giants scout DOUG MAPSON and writes at 64, he "still loves to travel after scouting full-time" for MLB teams for 32 years. Mapson "estimates that he has lived in hotels 150 to 200 nights per year for the past 20 years."
