  • MLB Attendance Down 3% Through All-Star Break; Astros, Rangers Seeing Dip

MLB teams are averaging 29,220 fans per game through the All-Star break, down 3% compared to the same point last year. Eight MLB clubs are seeing a double-digit percentage drop. Among AL clubs, the Yankees lead the way with 39,669 fans per game. But that figure is down 7% from last year. The Rangers, despite coming off two straight World Series appearances and currently holding one of the two AL Wild Card spots, are seeing a 10% drop at the gate. The Astros are seeing the AL's sharpest drop during their first season after leaving the NL. Average attendance at Minute Maid Park is down 17% to date. The Blue Jays lead all MLB clubs in gains at the gate, up 18%. Also seeing respectable gains in the AL are the A's (+11%) and Orioles (+9%) (THE DAILY). MLB Commissioner Bud Selig "remains optimistic about closing the gap in the season's second half." MLB "has had 34 rainouts thus far in '13, sharply above the 21 for all of last year." Selig: "The weather has really hurt us this year" (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

Listed below is team-by-team attendance for AL clubs through the All-Star break, with comparisons to the same period last year. See tomorrow's issue for NL figures.
