San Antonio Supermarket H-E-B Extends Deal As Spurs' Main Sponsor For Five Years

The Spurs and execs from San Antonio-based supermarket H-E-B plan to announce a deal next week that will “secure H-E-B's place as the main sponsor" of the team for the next five years, according to Neal Morton of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. H-E-B will also sponsor the other franchises under the Spurs Sports & Entertainment banner, including the WNBA Silver Stars, ECHL San Antonio Rampage and NBA D-League Austin Toros. Spurs F Kawhi Leonard “signed a two-year contract to star in a series of commercial spots for H-E-B” alongside Gs Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and F Tim Duncan. Leonard's addition to the commercial lineup “capped weeks of negotiations” between H-E-B and SS&E. When H-E-B “first became the lead sponsor of the Spurs in 2004, the deal was a Spurs first and one of three such agreements in the NBA.” The practice “has grown in popularity" since then, and national and int'l corporations such as Kaiser Permanente, Kia and State Farm recently "have served as presenting sponsors of individual teams, drafts and even NBA games on Christmas Day.” H-E-B also has “gained access to Spurs' licenses held by the NBA, and it recently introduced Spurs-themed ice cream and wine” (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/27).
