Final Ratings: EPL Down During Final Season On ESPN/ESPN2; WNBA Starts Strong

ESPN and ESPN2 combined to average 254,000 viewers for 51 telecasts during the ’12-13 EPL season, with the league’s games set to move to NBC Sports Network next season. That figure is down from 321,000 viewers last season and 301,000 viewers during the ’10-11 season. ESPN Deportes also saw a dip for its 30 EPL matches. The Spanish-language net averaged 49,000 viewers, down from 58,000 viewers last season and 55,000 in ’10-11 (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

ROOKIE SYMPOSIUM: ESPN2 averaged 455,000 viewers for the WNBA Sky-Mercury matchup on Monday, which was the late afternoon game as part of the league’s opening day doubleheader. The game featured touted draft picks in Sky C Elena Delle Donne and Mercury C Brittney Griner. That audience marks the net’s most-viewed WNBA game since ’04. The early afternoon game, which featured Mystics-Shock, drew 314,000 viewers. The doubleheader averaged 366,000 viewers (ESPN).

NOTES: Golf Channel had its most-viewed month of May ever, giving the net five consecutive months of record-setting audience to open ’13. On a total-day basis, Golf Channel had a 19% audience gain compared to May ’12 (Golf Channel)….The St. Louis market drew a 2.6 local rating for ESPN2’s telecast of the Manchester City-Chelsea friendly on May 23. The Austin market ranked second with a 1.0 local rating and N.Y. ranked third with a 0.7 (STLTODAY.com, 5/30)….MSG Network was the most-viewed RSN in primetime in the N.Y. market over the last 12 months among males 25-54 and adults 25-54 (MSG).

Ratings for recent sports telecasts were not available at presstime due to a delay from Memorial Day.
